Understanding Pet Emergencies

Since pets can’t tell us when they’re sick or in need of immediate medical care, it’s up to us to know the signs.

The following symptoms and situations indicate an emergency situation that requires pet urgent care:

  • Difficulty breathing (excessive panting, coughing)

  • Wounds from an encounter with a wild animal

  • Suspected broken bones

  • Eye injuries

  • Vomiting or diarrhea for more than 24 hours

  • Blood in vomit, urine, or stool

  • Blood coming from the mouth, ears, eyes, or nose

  • Ingestion of a known toxic substance

  • Seizures

  • Collapse or unconsciousness

  • Disorientation or confusion

  • Pressing head against a wall or other surface
